A midwife is a healthcare professional who specialises in nursing care for women in pregnancy, labour and delivery. The midwife’s involvement usually ceases after the postpartum period. To qualify as a midwife, it is essential to gain entry into a degree programme: the usual requirement for entry is five GCSE’s and two A-Levels, however the NHS does encourage applications from those with a wide gamut of both academic and vocational qualifications.
